CyanogenMod 9 for Milestone A853

Main credits:
Obviously, it's the CyanogenMod team and all CM contributors in the first place.
Besides that and my own humble work, CM for Milestone would not be where it is now without the essential works of Skrilax_CZ (2nd-init, OpenRecovery, lot of work on custom kernel, 2ndboot fixes and more), Czechop (hack to the kernel usb initialization code that allows to keep BP working after 2ndboot to custom kernel), f_pasha (gkisystem semaphore patch), Tiago Sousa (author of the original overclock kernel module) and contributions from others that I forgot to list here ;) .
Also worth mentioning is a lot of notable work done by the Defy developers: Epsylon, Quarx and Maniac103
The original 2ndboot code is by Dmitriy Taychenachev and Eugen Maksimov.

Please note that Milestone is not officially supported by CyanogenMod.

xda thread:

gapps 20121225:
OpenRecovery 2ndbootOR:

Because of limited space in system, gapps are installed to /data/vendor. But if ext partition is present on sdcard, they are moved to /sd-ext.
Therefore ext partition is highly recommended for CM9, otherwise the space for apps in /data will be too limited.
You can find instructions on how to resize fat and create ext3 partition directly in OpenRecovery in this very fine guide by pontomedon:
Full guide from stock Motorola Android to CyanogenMod 7 for Milestone

CM9 for Milestone is using 2ndboot to run custom kernel despite the bootloader kernel lock.

Android 4.x requires at least 340MB RAM available to kernel and userspace
As we have only 225MB, don't expect any miracles - the hardware constrains count.

HW acceleration increases application's RAM demands. You can use the included HWA Settings app to disable it per app.

Known issues:
You tell me ;) .

9.1.0d (4.0.4) 07.01.2013
- fix: keep keyboard backlight off while keyboard is hidden
- fix crash on launch of certain apps (e.g. Aldiko) - use workaround for occasional mysteriously zeroed bitmap scale parameter
- Apollo music player fixes - jellybean backports; reworked image fetching and caching (by iwo)

9.1.0c (4.0.4) 30.12.2012
- call recording: fix recording for calls with asterisk in the phone number
- fix the per app HW acceleration disable code to work according to application package name as specified by HWA Settings app (the original implementation [which pre-dated HWA app usage] used process name, not package name)
- re-implement the 'Disable Dock Observer' option - for users of phone cases with magnetic closures (to prevent the screen turning on in reaction to a magnet appearing near the phone)

9.1.0b (4.0.4) 26.12.2012
- fix VoiceSearch, VoiceTyping and Talk (voice) - please use the updated gapps package
- fix adb toggle
- fix possible crash when recording videos and re-enable limited preview frame rate for better Camera app responsiveness
- fix backup of system files (mostly gapps) during ROM updates
- add built-in call recording option; no beeps every 10s during call recording any more
- updated CMFileManager
- wifi: disable 802.11n support by default (HT_Enable in tiwlan.ini) to prevent stale data connections when using certain N routers
- kernel: reverted doubling of the DAC fifo size to 16384 (to prevent audio drop-outs) as it caused broken audio playback in certain games

in case you're wondering why the new build is not uploaded to github as before, see

9.1.0a (4.0.4) 11.12.2012
- fix relaunch of some activities on keyboard slide out/in (e.g. YouTube playback, Root Explorer...)
- CMFileManager included (backport from JB)
- fix unwanted lcd-backlight activation by camera button while the screen is off (was related to the light sensor workaround that allows to use camera button to provoke sending of light sensor data without waiting for ALS interrupt)
- better handling of Basband Processor panic (by maniac103) - instead of immediate reboot like in stock firmware, user is notified and can choose to postpone the reboot (e.g. when he's got some work to finish first). Note about the reason of reboot is displayed after restart.
- workarounds for some motorola RIL issues that cause occasional data connectivity problems (by maniac103)
- optional swap activation on boot via /system/etc/init.d/12swap
-- requires swap partition present as third partition on sdcard
-- swap size (in kB) is determined by persist.sys.swapsize property
-- no persist.sys.swapsize property defined or set to 0 means no swap activation

example how to set persist.sys.swapsize property in terminal:
setprop persist.sys.swapsize 16384

9.1.0 (4.0.4) 05.12.2012
notable recent fixes and features:
- support for connecting to adhoc wifi
- fixed wifi networking when using UPnP/DLNA apps
- note that this build is done from the branch with removed theme engine,
as the theme support seems to be too heavy, hurting performance of our device

- video recording (not exactly smooth yet, but working nevertheless)
- added missing sysctl to prevent RAM fragmentation (cause of gmaps freezes)
- etc.

- camera is working (only taking pictures, not video recording; panorama mode is not working)
- switched back to Calendar and LatinIME built from source
- bootanimation is enabled by default, it can be disabled under performance settings
- baseband selection is under device>advanced settings
- usb and native wifi tethering is not working yet (but should be fixed soon, probably in the next build)

- until the open source solution will be ready, Google builds of Calendar and CalendarProvider are installed via gapps to provide Google Calendar sync. Google build of LatinIME is included to provide access to downloadable dictionaries.
- most of the gapps are installed to /data/vendor. if you are updating from earlier CM9 build, use "rm -r /system/*" in recovery console before installation to make sure you don't run out of space in /system because of previously installed gapps
- bootanimation is disabled (debug.sf.nobootanimation=1 in build.prop), because the default bootanim takes more than 80MB of RAM while running, which may cause issues - from very long boot time to bootloops.

You are missing a link to a guide. I belive you are referring to the same one posted on xda:

And thank you for your ingenious work.

I just wanna to say thank you to you for the milestone work for MOTO Milestone A853.

me too, many thanks!

hello Pavel,

whether you had given thanks for the IRC channel, but I will do around here too, I always trust who could do this and kick back to those who thought they would not be possible.

congratulations from Cuba.

Thanks a lot for your work. :)

thx for the work, when is going to release another CM9 update??

Thank you for this and all the great work you do about milestone!

Congratulations this is much better than the GB. (only one other thing that has some flaws, is that after several days of use it gets a little slow the system :/ but the rest is a luxury :D )

Nadlabak Thanks for your work is fabulous! have full support from Valledupar Colombia! waiting for new ROM'S

Thank you for that great work. I thought i must throw my stone away and buy a new phone like the razr or the new nexus. But you did it guy. you are so awesome. i love your work. it's great.

Thank you for that good stuff!!!!

Hi guys

First off all, congratulations for your amazing job!!!

Did the WiFi Tethering ( 3G Hotspot ) apk was removed from this version?

I d found just USB / BlueTooth tethering options!

Best regards

i found this at cm7 v7.1.4

7.1.4 (2.3.7) 19.01.2012
- native wifi tethering finally works (proprietary 3G Mobile Hotspot removed, no dun apn dependency anymore)

maybe this is the same for cm9 ...

I notice this to, but I didnt found the "WiFi" option...

The tethering option is releasead only for BlueTooth and USB...

only BT tethering currently works
WIFI and USB is still being worked on, stay tuned

Tks for your reply =)

I love it, its super smooth and fairly stable for an initial release. I hope you keep working on it.

hi, thanx for all the effort to keep the milestone on the bleeding edge!

I just (2012-01-21) repo sync'ed and built. It was the first build using `vendor/cm/get-prebuilts' - before I did resolve the dependency to manually.
But still the terminal won't start (which is not an issue in general, as adb works very well).
An exception is thrown: ...lang.ExceptionInInitializerError at jackpal.androidterm.session.TermSession.
Anyway thought to report that - if this is a general issue, you may list it in the 'what's not working section'.

bye, pottendo

hi, i tried to buy some new apps but i always get the message "error occured. pls try again" ... does anyone else have this issue?

I notice this while trying to buy an app too. Maybe there is some problems in wallet integration or some thing like that

Excellent work !! Congratulations and keep working please !!

excellent work, waiting for a new version to test. for me it is stable

Greetings from Venezuela
@ josegjimenez + josegjimenez

I never thought I would see the day ICS was running on my Milestone - You simply kick butt!!

Greetings and Thanks from Germany

Thanks Kabaldan, I didn't have much hope but have to say I'm really impressed. Performance is on par or maybe even better than with cm7. Even with some heavy widgets (3xbeautiful widgets, 2xandroid pro widgets), gvoice and imo in memory I still have 40megs avail.
I'm using nova launcher from xda, a big improvement over trebuchet, suggest you all guys try it.
For those scared to try this, go for it, it's worth it.

Once more, thanks man, if it wasn't for you I'd have bailed on my stone a long time ago.

Yes! indeed, with a difference is detected nova acceptable and fluidity ... It proves to nova

@josegjimenez +josegjimenez

If you're right on Nova launcher is very fluid, stable and customizable stock! I really like. expect the ROM continues to evolve as it really is very stable in our milestone :)
I hope that with the corrections of some errors, cleaning etc. can free up some more RAM :)

Thank you very much Nadlabak is a exellent job!

Thank you man! you did a good job! ICS can finally running on my MS though there are some bugs to be fixed.

Would you please tell me how to removed the factory Japanese IME in my phone. I don't need it and I don't know which akp should be deleted.

Thank you again!

I've used "14.1.2012" over the past four days, very well done! When I returned to CM7 today I felt how fast that ripe version of android 2.3.* really is and that you keept working on it. Even backporting CM9 code. So thanks for your effort on all fields, I am looking forward to seeing you optimize that new codebase.

I'm having some issues on Market when I try to install or just update an app being it system or user installed app in like 70% of the apps it returns an error saying that there's not enough space available for installing it. I've checked and I have more than 3x the space needed for the apps to be installed. Does anyone have that problem too?

Besides that, that's the most awesome rom i've ever ran on my Milestone and I've been running it like stable for more than a week right now.
Thanks for your amazing work.

i had that problem too, when i looked up how much space the apps consumed (settings-apps) it refreshed the status and i could install stuff again.

It seems the CM9 file is not downloadable. Can you please post another alternate download link?

Thanks! :)

See in the thread linked.
Most current build as of now (finished 10 minutes ago) is

What changes.this zip you compiled has? Any improvement?

this is the same rom znetroll public yesterday xda page?? or is completely different from this?

This includes "push to nadlabak ics at nadlabak / android_device_motorola_umts_sholes About 18 hours ago

Even pretend cbc1f50 bigger size of system partition "nadlabak created yesterday?

The alternate download sites work. The ROM is a fine piece of work! Planning to use it for next couple of days. Dont use camera as such, so no issues.
The milestone is saved, thanks to you!

Very good work! It is a little bit slow reacting on my phone, but very impressive!

cant wait for the missing hw features other then that its fast works great.

Excellent Thanks Kabaldan

Do you know when another version will be available?

Excellent !! I agree it is a great effort. Just despearately waiting for the Stable fully functional Version.

There is a problem with the battery statistics. It is not working and you can not see how much battery you have. I installed motorolas 2.2 and it worked then again i used cm7 and cm9 the latest versions and battery indicator is not working plz fix this.

I am using the latest ROM (106 MB) and i have noticed that the Y key and the Z key have changed places.??? Secondly is ther a way to map the back key onto any key combination on the key board. Actually my touch screen is not working and i am just using the keyboard for all functions.

You have a QWERTZ layout and CM is configured as QWERTY, or viceversa. Check Settings > Device settings > Keyboard/Secondary char-map.
- arielCo

(that's for CM7 - I haven't checked CM9 but it could be similar)
- arielCo

Like i said my touch screen is kaput.Untill i replace it,can the back key be mapped on the keypad somehow??

Hey Guys. I fianlly got the answer. There is an app called buttonremapper.Just download it and install it. You can remap anything.
Here is the link

GOOD JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi nice pices of job in putting all things in one place.
I did upgraded my Milestone to CM9, found very sluggish. It ran out of space for internal memory. Though i have applications installed on SDCard.
I did doengraded to CM7.1.5

Like to know how others feel on performance, might be some trick to improve performance.

ICS is running really good on the milestone. Missing the CM features and the camera, but ICS is so great that I´m using it as my default os.

The only real problem is with the ext partition, using it turns the system too slow.

I do notice this too

its not so fast as without the partition, but its not a problem any more.

Hi, I have found that my Milestone does not boot after flashing the ICS ROM. It stays stuck on the Motorola flash screen until the battery is drained, at which point it dies. Has anyone had this problem/is there a way to get around this?
